Soccer Shirts
Soccer shirts for professional players must comply with
association football rules. These rules, known as the Laws of the Game,
are written and maintained by The International Football Association
Board (IFAB). The section which addresses clothing is Law 4: Players’
Equipment.
According to these rules, soccer shirts must have sleeves. If an article
of clothing is worn underneath, it must be the same color as the sleeve
of the jersey. Undershorts follow similar rules with the main color
of the shorts.
Because soccer shirts are considered part of basic compulsory equipment,
they are not allowed to display any religious, political or personal
statements. If a player removes his or her shirt to reveal advertising
or slogans, it will be penalized by the organizer of the competition.
The player’s team will also be penalized, either by the competition
organizer or by the Fédération Internationale de Football
Association (FIFA).
