Soccer Uniforms

Soccer uniforms are also known as soccer “kit.” These are designed to enhance game play as well as simply to not detract from it. A basic kit is comprised of a shirt, shorts, socks, shinguards, and footwear. Goalies will commonly wear variations including gloves and caps.

Though the game was first played in England during the 1860s, the concept of a standard team color for soccer uniforms had not yet come about at that time. Instead, team members commonly identified each other with colored caps or sashes. It took a decade or so before standard kits began to arise.

At this time, many alterations to soccer uniforms came out of necessity. Specific colors aided team members in recognizing their teammates. It also helped game observers better keep track of the score. Some matters primarily dealt with protection. For instance, the first shin pads came about in 1874.

A century later, during the 1970s, commercial considerations began to affect soccer kit. This was when brand names of uniform manufacturers and company logos began showing up on jerseys.
